A close-up of the unicorn
|
I almost didn't make it on time but here it is, my art journal spread to enter the Lindy's May 2020 color challenge. Since the last spread had the text "Mermaid today, unicorn tomorrow" I decided to go for the unicorn theme this time. The saying would have been even more accurate if I had started making this on the first day of May, since I posted the last blog post on the last day of April. I did choose which spray and magical powders I would use for coloring but then I moved on to other things.

| Coloring the background and the unicorn |
I mixed the Rusty lantern lime and Gag me with a spoon magical powders with water in small cups and then with a brush I painted some quick and vague areas of color. I already had sketched the unicorn so I tried to get some shading as well. I used the Plumeria pink spray to color the mane and the tail.

Then I started stamping on the background. I used a few stamps from the Lacy scrolls set by Altenew and the checker stamp by Mudra stamps. I used Distress inks for stamping. I also used the black ink to color the edges just lightly with the blending tool.

While waiting for the background to dry I started working on the unicorn. I wasn't sure how to pose it. I had one leg loose so I could move it around. Eventually I decided to rotate the mane and the tail more downwards and place them both under and above the unicorn's body.
I gave the unicorn more colors and details with wooden color pencils and the white Distress ink which I applied with a wet brush. I also used the embossing tool to emboss the mane and tail to make them look more lively. I made the horn with the Dovecraft's 3d pearl effect paint. I also tried the Liquid pearls by Ranger but it didn't keep its shape after drying.
