Gold and glitter - A challenge from 13arts

While I was working on the Lindy's color challenge I was also planning on another challenge. The 13arts had, well still has (the deadline is due tomorrow), an ongoing challenge that is themed with gold and more gold. You can check the link to the challenge page down at the bottom.

Mixed media

This was suppose to be an easy peasy but I was really struggling to get a good start. In fact, I did two versions which never made it. The other one got gessoed over with black gesso and is now waiting for a new chance. And the other one... went to the trash bin. It was so ugly, beyond fix-it-with-gesso. This work isn't as pretty as hoped for but I will publish it anyway.

I have a small collection of 13arts' products. I even had to leave out some products because there where so many of them. I started off by adhereing a paper onto the base card. I used the 13arts gel medium as the glue and the paper was from the Until dawn paper pad, size 6x6 inches. I had a diecut cut with the Marianne design's die. Only diecut not embossed, though the embossing could have looked nice, too. I cut it into two pieces and adhered them to the opposite corners. I covered the whole background with Prima's clear gesso and then I used a little of 13arts white gesso. While the background was drying I took the Moikka (hello) chipboard and gessoed it with white gesso. I used the Tattered angels' golden orange glimmer mist to color the chipboard. Then I covered it with Distress stickles scattered straw glue and while it was wet sprinkled over it golden microbeads and microspheres (13arts old gold xs). The bigger beads were some other brand, I don't remember which.

So, next I took the 13arts' Maremi's stencil called cells and made a pattern with it. The white gesso was thick enough to use as modeling paste. I colored the background using Ayeeda Rainbow color duos, navy blue and turquoise, and also some Ayeeda mist Pearl turquoise light. When that had dried I took the trusty glitter glue, Frosted lace and covered some of those gaps in the diecuts and around the stenciled pattern. I also the Eucalyptys glitter glue to the diecuts. I like how the color pigments dye the glitter glue. Pity they are so small bottles and hard to get all of the glue out off the bottles.

While the glues were wet I sprinkled over some golden microbeads and microspheres. I also used clear beads on the bigger diecut piece. I tried to use the Ayeeda gold glitter paint but it only made the cells look too yellow. I'm not sure if the paint's consistency is what it is suppose to be. I did stir it but It looks nothing like the images. I cleaned off most of the glitter lumps. Guess this wasn't the right project for it.

I will try to use the glitter paint in some other project. Perhaps mix it with the multipurpose powder to make texture paste. I actually made a batch of modeling paste by mixing the multipurpose powder with some art medium, water and black Rainbow color duo. It's very light and spreads easy. I cracks a bit when it dries, I think it's the water because I poured so much of it. If I hadn't added the color to it, I could have used it in this work. The grey color just wasn't right for this background.

Okay, let's move on... I used Prima's acrylic paint, metallique Ancient coin on those edges of the background. I diecut some leaves and branches using the Sizzix die set. I decided to leave them white. I did color some of them but thought the white would look better. I made a little crochet flower, even the yarn has some gold fiber in it. I put Ranger Orange peel glitter glue to the center and added glass beads onto it. I put some larger beads to the organza ribbon and glued it behind the flower. The chipboard is stationed a bit awkwardly. There was gap between stenciled areas and I had to hide it somehow.

A little closer
