Lindy's color challenge July 2020

A close-up of the surface and the loose tongue

I have exceeded myself, I managed to finish this color challenge and the dead-line is not even close. Since I had generous amount of time I decided to add more texture to the background. I used the acrylic primer by 13@rts as modeling paste. When the paste was dry I put the stencil back over the same areas and added some crackle texture paste by Ranger. I also put it in other areas. I applied it with the brush so it's appears as tiny fine crackles.

Creating the base

I started the coloring with Lindy's Bling-y blonde magical powder. I mixed the color with water in a cup and brushed it over the background. I left some areas lighter. I let it dry and then added more yellowish color. Then I mixed the black color in another cup and added that to the background which became a bit greenish. I didn't mind since the stenciled pattern had leaves on it.

I have noticed before that the 13@rts' acrylic primer sucks in all the color leaving the surface very light. It did the same this time, too. I tried using more solid black which was black acrylic paint diluted with water. That also got sucked in but at least it darkened the edges a bit.

Adding the first color

Trying to deepen the black color

I wanted the colors to be more darker so I used the Ranger's Distress glaze to seal the surface. I rubbed it on with my fingers and then with a paper towel removed the excess. I used the glaze for the first time, actually. I thought it would have been more like a solid wax but it was very soft, like thick goo. I let the glaze dry a bit and then covered the surface with clear gesso. That one made the background look even lighter. When the gesso had dried I added more of each colors. They obviously puddled on the surface but looked great after drying.

Sealing the surface and prepping for more color

Adding even more colors

What about the focal point... what would it be this time? I let the thoughts and ideas wander for a couple of days. The idea of a split-tongue snake came to me when I was in contact with a person that said negative stuff several times and then at some point changed the mind and started sweet talking. I guess it's better to have it that way than the other way round. Although, who really knows someone else's thoughts...

I sketched the snake's body-parts, cut them out and vaguely traced them onto Kipper's hobby's watercolor paper. I started coloring with the Lindy's Poppin' pink. Spread it with water, partially dried it and added more color and water. Then I added the purple Urban amethyst. I repeated the same stages but I didn't spread the color so much.

I used another spray bottle (not the Ranger one in the picture, but an empty hair conditioner spray bottle) to spray some water spots to the dry/semi-dry surface. The Ranger bottle makes fine mist but I wanted larger spots. I like how the snake's skin turned out. It's a bit pity it got covered.

Time for the focal point

Arranging the pieces

To the background I whisked some black spots with the black acrylic paint and water mixture. And glued down a few black rhinestones in different sizes. The snake got black stripes made with the Sakura's marker and also some wider shimmery black stripes made with the Lindy's black magical powder. The snake looked like a purple worm more than a snake so I added white circles and dots for decoration

I cut the tongue from a black paper and gave some shimmer to it with that same black magical powder. I used glue to the small area that is under the snakes head. Otherwise the tongue is loose and pops up a bit. The eyes could have been higher up but, hey, it's a purple imaginary snake. Who could say it doesn't look like it how it should?
